대한예수교장로회(합동, 총회장 전계헌 목사) 새에덴교회(소강석 목사)는 6월 17일, 프라미스홀에서 ‘한국전 68주년 상기 참전용사 초청 보은·평화 기원예배’를 드렸다.

새에덴교회는 2007년부터 12년째 6·25 한국전쟁에 UN군의 일원으로 참전했던 해외 참전 용사들을 초청해 그들의 희생을 기억하고 감사 행사를 개최하고 있다.

이번 행사에는 흥남철수작전 책임 지휘관이었던 故 알몬드 장군(미 10군단장)과 故 포니 대령(상륙작전 참모장)의 유족과 故 제임스 도일 제독(상륙기동부대 사령관)의 유족, 메러디스 빅토리호의 1등 항해사였던 로버트 러니 예비역 해군 제독(91) 등 총 45명이 참석했다.

한국·미국·캐나다 참전용사들의 기수 입장으로 시작된 이날 제1부 보은·평화 기원예배에서는 소강석 목사가 설교를 했으며, 제2부 기념식은 애국가 및 미국과 캐나다 국가제창, 예비역 해군제독 김종대 장로의 전사자·실종자 추모 및 흥남철수작전 감사인사,

소강석 목사는 신명기 16:1~3을 본문으로 한 '기억의 힘'이라는 제하의 설교를 통해 "이스라엘 민족은 기억의 힘을 믿고 중요하게 생각했다"면서 "지금 우리가 누리고 있는 평화와 번영은 우연이 아니라, 한국전쟁에서 목숨 바쳐 싸웠던 참전용사들의 희생 덕분으로 우리는 결코 그것을 잊어선 안 되고 끝까지 기억해야 된다"고 권면 했다.

문재인 대통령은 김진표 의원이 대독한 축하전문에서 “이 땅의 자유와 평화를 지키기 위해 값진 생명과 젊음을 바치신 참전용사들이 있었기에 지금의 대한민국이 가능했다"면서 "대한민국을 대표하여 참전용사와 가족 여러분께 깊은 감사와 존경의 인사를 드리며, 대한민국이 평화와 번영의 새로운 한반도 시대를 나아가는데 지속적인 관심과 성원을 보내 주시길 부탁드린다"고 전했다.

Sixty-eight years after free nations banded together and free peoples refused to yield, we pause to

reflect on a conflict that defined a generation and determined the fate of a country. Today, South

Korea is a vibrant democracy and home to one of the world’s most dynamic economies, and

South Koreans live in freedom. This is the proud legacy of the brave patriots of the Korean War.

Just as selflessness and sacrifice define our troops in uniform, ensuring our veterans receive the

care and support they earned must define who we are as Americans. By lifting up our veterans

and our military families, organizations like yours help uphold our sacred obligation to our

heroes and reflect the spirit of a grateful Nation. On behalf of the American people, I thank

SaeEden Church of South Korea and Rev. Dr. So, KangSuk for annually hosting the Korean War

Veterans Appreciation Program for 12 years in a row.

On behalf of a grateful Nation, I salute our veterans of the Korean War and all who have worn

the uniforms of our Armed Forces. Thank you for stepping forward when others step back.

美 텍사스 주지사 그렛 애봇도 인사말을 보내왔는데, 애봇 주지사는 "저는 2007년부터 3천 2백명의 6·25 전쟁 참전용사 가족들을 기억해 주셨던 새에덴교회의 성도님들에게 가장 깊은 존경을 표한다"며 인사 전한 후, "우리는 마지막까지 자신을 희생했던 참전용사들에게 가장 깊은 존경을 표해야 할 것‘이라며 “그들은 진정한 애국자들이었으며, 그저 국가의 부름에 응답을 한 것이기 때문에 그들과 그들의 가족들은 영원히 존경받아야 할 것"이라고 강조했다.
